AI has arrived everywhere in everyday marketing. But half of the “AI tools” are hype. Where does AI genuinely work in a small business, and for whom?
In brief
- AI is at its best at scaling: content production, ad creative variations, email automations.
- AI is at its worst at strategic thinking, brand messaging and creative concepting.
- A realistic efficiency gain: 30–70 % in certain areas.
- Tools that work: ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Copy.ai, Descript.
- Tools that are not yet ready: fully automatic campaign management systems.
Where is AI already productive in marketing?
- Content drafts — ChatGPT or Claude writes the first version, you edit it.
- A/B testing emails — AI generates ten versions and you test them all.
- Ad image production: Midjourney produces variations quickly.
- Translation: DeepL is close to human level already.

Where is AI not ready yet?
- Strategic planning — a human is needed for business understanding.
- Creating the brand message: it takes cultural and emotional understanding.
- Running campaigns independently: Meta and Google ads need human supervision.
Who are AI tools essential for?
- A one-person digital marketing agency — AI multiplies output.
- A content production company: in practice you have to use AI for the speed.
- A small business owner doing their own marketing.

Frequently asked questions
Is AI-written text detectable?
Published as-is, usually yes: the structure is even-paced and the examples generic, and both readers and classifiers pick up on it. Once the text has been edited, fact-checked and filled in with your own knowledge and examples, there is no practical difference. Google has stated it judges the result, not the production method.
Does Google penalise AI content?
Not for how it was produced. The penalty targets content made primarily for search engines rather than people, and mass-produced AI text falls into that category easily. One carefully edited article is not a risk; a thousand auto-generated pages are.
What is the best AI tool for a marketer?
It depends on the task. Claude and ChatGPT for drafting and editing text, Midjourney for images, Descript for video. More important than the tool is that a person signs off on the result before it goes out.
Does using AI help you appear in AI search?
Not on its own. Content written with AI does not surface in AI answers any better than content written by hand. Visibility comes down to whether the page answers the question directly and whether the models trust the source. That work is called GEO.
