Bing visibility matters again — AI search draws on its index

Bing-näkyvyys osana hakukoneoptimointia: SEO-teksti seinällä

Bing visibility became relevant again after years of quiet, because several AI services rely on Bing’s index for their web searches. A site that is not in good shape on Bing can fall outside AI answers regardless of how well it ranks on Google. The good news: securing a baseline of Bing visibility is a few hours of work.

Few people in Finland search with Bing, which is why it has been a footnote in SEO work for years. AI search changed that indirectly: when a language model runs a web search to base its answer on, it uses some search index, and that index is often not Google, whose data others cannot access. Through the Microsoft and OpenAI partnership, Bing’s index has been the backbone of ChatGPT’s search function, and many smaller AI services buy their search from the same source.

In practice: when ChatGPT searches for ”best accounting firm in Tampere”, the candidates are more likely to come from Bing’s index than Google’s. If your site is missing from it or appears poorly, you are not a candidate, even if your Google rankings are in order.

Bing visibility in AI search: search results on a computer screen

Check these three things first

1. Is your site in Bing’s index? Search Bing for site:yourdomain.com. If there are clearly fewer results than your site has pages, indexing is incomplete.

2. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing’s equivalent of Google Search Console is free and tells you indexing problems directly. Site verification can be imported from Search Console in a couple of clicks, and submitting the sitemap happens at the same time.

3. Is something blocking Bingbot? Check robots.txt and any bot protection. The same check is worth running for AI crawlers at the same time, because blocks are more common than people think, since some security plugins block ”unusual” crawlers by default.

Four questions and you know what is holding growth back

The growth diagnosis tells you in a minute whether the bottleneck is visibility, the site or measurement.

Does optimising for Bing differ from optimising for Google

The basic principles are the same: quality content, sound technology, clear structure. A few differences in emphasis are worth knowing. Bing reads page metadata and structured data conscientiously, so the condition of your schema markup shows there readily. Bing also favours straightforward signals — precise titles and a clear page hierarchy — where Google tolerates more vagueness. And Bing indexes a small site more lazily, so a sitemap and Webmaster Tools notifications speed up the discovery of new pages noticeably.

A separate Bing strategy is still not needed. It is enough to include Bing on the checklist: indexing in order, Webmaster Tools in use, no blocks. After that the same content work serves both indexes, and through them AI search.

What this means for GEO work

The chain of AI visibility is decided by its weakest link. The content can be perfect, but if the index a language model searches does not know your site, the chain breaks at the start. That is why the technical part of a GEO audit always includes checking index coverage in both main indexes. It is the cheapest single fix on the whole work list, and neglecting it nullifies the more expensive investments.

Why Bing matters more than its market share suggests

Bing’s share of Finnish searches sits in the low single digits, which makes it easy to dismiss. The reason to pay attention is that its index feeds services with far more users than Bing itself.

Microsoft Copilot is built on it directly. Several other assistants and browser features draw on the same index, and some smaller AI services buy search results rather than crawl the web themselves. When your page is absent from Bing, it is absent from all of them at once, no matter how well it ranks on Google.

This is the practical argument. You are not optimising for Bing users. You are making sure a second index knows your site exists, because a growing number of answers are built from it.

Check your indexing before anything else

Start by finding out how much of your site Bing actually has. Bing Webmaster Tools is free, and the account can be created by importing your Search Console settings, which takes a couple of minutes rather than requiring a fresh verification.

Three numbers tell you where you stand. The count of indexed pages compared with your sitemap total shows whether anything is missing. The crawl error list shows what is blocked. The search performance view shows which pages already appear and for what.

A common finding is that Bing has a fraction of what Google has. The usual causes are a sitemap never submitted to Bing, a robots.txt that names Googlebot in an allow rule and forgets the rest, or protection software treating BingBot as unknown traffic.

Where Bing behaves differently from Google

Optimising for both is mostly the same work, but a few differences are consistent enough to act on.

  • Exact wording counts for more. Bing matches literal phrases more readily than Google, so a heading that repeats the customer’s own phrasing helps more than it does elsewhere.
  • Page titles carry weight. A descriptive title that names the topic plainly performs better than a clever one.
  • Fresh content is picked up faster on smaller sites. Bing’s index has room, so a new page from a small company can appear quickly.
  • Social signals appear to matter slightly more. Bing has said as much publicly, and pages shared widely tend to be found sooner.

None of these justify a separate Bing strategy. They justify checking that the ordinary work is not accidentally excluding one index.

IndexNow, and what it is worth

IndexNow is a protocol that tells participating search engines a page has changed, instead of waiting for a crawl. Bing supports it, several other engines do too, and setup is simple.

In WordPress most SEO plugins include it as a checkbox. Behind the scenes a key file goes in the site root and the site pings a shared endpoint whenever content changes. Nothing else needs maintaining.

Be realistic about the benefit. IndexNow speeds up discovery; it does not improve ranking. For a site publishing weekly it is a modest convenience. For a site with pricing, stock or event information that changes often, it genuinely shortens the window in which answers cite outdated figures.

Measuring whether it worked

Bing visibility can be measured with the same discipline as any other channel, and it needs no extra tools.

The indexing figure in Bing Webmaster Tools is the base measure: it should approach your sitemap total and stay there. Second, put ten of your customers’ questions to Copilot once a month and record whether your site is cited. Third, watch for bing.com and copilot.microsoft.com referrals in analytics, where the volume is small but the trend is readable over a quarter.

Do not expect these numbers to be large. The point of the exercise is that they should not be zero, because a zero means a whole family of AI services cannot see you at all.

A short checklist

Half an hour of work covers the essentials for most sites.

  • Create Bing Webmaster Tools and import from Search Console rather than verifying separately.
  • Submit the sitemap even if you assume Bing has found it. Assumption is the usual reason it is missing.
  • Read robots.txt for named rules. Anything that allows Googlebot specifically should allow the others too.
  • Confirm BingBot is not blocked by your firewall or CDN, using response codes in the server log.
  • Turn on IndexNow if your platform offers it as a setting.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Bing matter if nobody searches with Bing?

Because several AI services, ChatGPT’s search function foremost among them, use Bing’s index for their web searches. Bing visibility is therefore a route into AI answers rather than an end in itself.

How do I check whether my site is in Bing’s index?

Search Bing for site:yourdomain.com and compare the number of results with the number of pages on your site. A more precise picture comes from the free Bing Webmaster Tools, where the site can be verified through Google Search Console.

Does Bing need separate optimisation?

Not in practice. Once indexing is in order, the sitemap submitted and structured data in place, the same content work serves both Google and Bing. The differences are in emphasis, not in principle.

How quickly does Bing index a new page?

It varies, and on small sites often more slowly than Google. A URL submission in Webmaster Tools and an up-to-date sitemap speed it up noticeably.

Is it worth optimising for Bing when its market share is small?

The users are not the reason. Bing supplies the index behind Copilot and several other AI services, so a site missing from Bing is missing from all of them at once regardless of how it ranks on Google.

What does IndexNow actually change?

It tells participating search engines that a page has changed instead of waiting for the next crawl, which shortens the delay before updates appear. It speeds up discovery only and has no effect on ranking.

The whole chain of AI visibility — indexes, content and mentions — is described on the GEO service page. You can see your baseline in half a minute with the AI visibility test.
