SEO or Google Ads: how to choose the right channel for your situation

SEO ja Google Ads – kaksi tietä digimarkkinoinnin kanavavalinnassa

SEO or Google Ads? There is no single right answer to this question — and there is a reason it is so hard to get a straight one.

An SEO agency says SEO is better. A Google Ads agency says Ads is faster. Both are right, and both are wrong, depending on where you are and where you want to go.

Let us go through when each one works, what they actually cost and why the choice is usually not “either or” at all.

The short answer

  • You need customers now: Google Ads.
  • You are building lasting visibility: SEO.
  • Your business is niche and barely searched for — neither works alone. Meta or LinkedIn is better.
  • You have 6+ months and a continuous budget: both together.
  • Realistic cost: Google Ads from €1,000/month, SEO from €600–1,200/month.

How SEO and Google Ads differ

Both aim at the same thing: visitors to your site from Google. But how you get there is different:

Google AdsSEO
Time to first results1–2 weeks3–6 months
Cost modelYou pay for every clickHours plus content, not per click
Results stop when payment stopsYes, immediatelyNo, traffic continues for months
TargetingVery precise (keyword, area, time)Everyone searching the subject
ScalabilityUnlimited (if the budget allows)Limited by the site’s authority
PredictabilityHigh, data accumulates fastLower, Google’s algorithm varies
Cost per click€0.30–20Effectively €0.10–2 on average over a month

When Google Ads is the right choice

Real-time Google Ads data and cost per click analytics
Google Ads produces results immediately — but only for as long as you pay.

Google Ads works when time is limited and you need results fast. It is like buying a more expensive ticket for the fast lane.

Ads takes first place in these situations:

  • A new product or service on the market and you need leads now
  • Seasonal business (Christmas renovations, summer cottages, spring tyres)
  • A new website that does not rank in Google yet
  • High commercial intent (for example “car service Vantaa”: either a click happens or nothing does)
  • You want to test the market quickly — does the offering work at all?

Ads is not a good choice if:

  • Your product is barely searched for in Google
  • The media budget is under €500/month (not enough to gather data)
  • Margins are thin and the click price will not fit inside them

When SEO is the right choice

Search engine optimisation building long-term visibility in Google
SEO is an investment that produces after 3–6 months, but keeps going for years.

SEO is a long-term investment. For the first months you see almost nothing, and then one day you notice half your new leads arrive through organic search, without a euro going on click prices.

SEO takes first place in these situations:

  • The business is long-term with no seasonality
  • A subject area where customers genuinely look for information in Google
  • Competition is tough but the quality of the content can set you apart
  • You want to build an expert brand and authority
  • Click prices in Google Ads are too high in your industry

SEO is not the right choice if:

  • You need results within three months
  • Your site is technically in genuinely poor shape (fix that first)
  • You cannot commit to a 6+ month investment

Which is cheaper?

It depends on the period. Over the first three months Google Ads produces leads more cheaply, because SEO has not had time to work. Over a year SEO is nearly always cheaper, because the content keeps working long after.

A concrete example: a company investing €1,000/month in SEO might get 40 leads through the organic channel by the sixth month. An effective cost per lead of €25. The same lead in Google Ads might cost €60–100. The gap is large, but it only appears later.

The most common mistakes

1. Expecting quick results from SEO

After three months frustration sets in and SEO gets labelled a con — just as the results would have started appearing. SEO takes patience; without it you get nothing out of it.

2. Switching Google Ads off the moment it feels expensive

In Google Ads’ logic, data accumulates while the campaign runs. When you switch a campaign off, you lose the learning. When you switch it back on, you start over. Better to optimise than to stop.

3. Thinking of them as alternatives to each other

They complement each other. Ads brings results now, SEO secures the future. Together they form a whole where each compensates for the other’s weakness.

When to do both

SEO or Google Ads – deciding which marketing channel to choose
Usually the right answer is not “either or” but “both, in the right proportion”.

Whenever it is financially possible. In practice that means a total budget of at least €2,000/month for digital marketing.

Why both? Three reasons:

  • Google Ads gives SEO data. You see quickly which search terms genuinely convert, and then you build SEO pages for them.
  • SEO lowers your Google Ads click price. When your site is an authority in Google’s eyes, the quality scores of your paid ads rise too.
  • With both channels you cover more of the search results page. Appearing both organically and as an ad multiplies the likelihood of a click.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Google Ads first and SEO later?

You can. It is actually a good strategy: you use Ads to gather data and learn which search terms are worth optimising for. Six months later you shift the emphasis more towards organic.

If SEO is cheaper, why does anyone do Google Ads?

Because SEO does not produce results immediately. Business does not wait six months. And if competition is tough, SEO may never reach first place without enormous investment. Ads guarantees visibility, if you have the money.

What is a realistic monthly budget for each?

Google Ads: €800–3,000/month of media budget plus €300–1,200/month of management. SEO: €800–3,000/month of agency work (no media costs). See also Google Ads cost in 2026.
