GEO and AI search

Brand mentions are the currency of AI visibility — how to earn them

Brändimaininnat syntyvät suhteista: kaksi ihmistä kättelee

Brand mentions are the currency of AI visibility. A language model recommends companies it has encountered often enough and consistently enough, and unlike in search engine optimisation, the value of a mention does not depend on whether a link comes with it. This changes the logic of visibility work more than any other single difference between GEO and SEO. Here is why mentions decide it, where to earn them and how to tell a valuable mention from a worthless one.

Google’s authority calculation is built on links: a reference without a link is a weak signal to a search engine. A language model works differently. It learns statistical connections from a body of text, so when ”Company X” keeps appearing in the same contexts as the words ”bookkeeping”, ”Tampere” and ”recommended”, the model learns to associate them. A forum post, a podcast transcript or a listing without a single link builds that connection just as a linked article does.

The practical consequence: PR, customer conversations and industry listings, which have been treated as secondary in SEO work precisely because they carry no link, move to the centre in GEO. And conversely, technical link tricks with no readers do not help AI visibility at all, because a model does not learn from pages nobody cites or repeats.

Where the mentions should be

Not all mentions are equal. Models learn most from sources weighted in their training data and search results:

  • Wikipedia and established reference sources. The single heaviest type of source, and the most closely guarded. A Wikipedia article is realistic only for a company with independent news coverage.
  • News media and trade publications. An article, an interview or an expert comment in the media is a strong mention, because media sit both in the training data and at the top of search results.
  • Listings and directories. ”Best X companies” roundups end up directly as sources in answers. When a language model looks for a recommendation, it often quotes a ready-made list, and then being on the list is everything.
  • Forums and peer reviews. Reddit, Finnish discussion boards, trade forums, review platforms. Genuine user conversations carry surprising weight in models, because that is the language in which recommendations are actually given.
  • Partner and customer sites. A customer story on the customer’s own site is a double win: a mention and a link.

Four questions and you know what is holding growth back

The growth diagnosis tells you in a minute whether the bottleneck is visibility, the site or measurement.

Consistency is what makes mentions recognisable

To a model, ”Puro Digital”, ”PuroDigital Ltd” and ”puro digital marketing” can be three different things. Every spelling variant dilutes the learned association. That is why consistency matters as much as earning the mentions: the same name, the same description of what you do and the same location everywhere — on your own site, in your profiles, in directories and in how you talk about the company publicly. A muddled identity shows up directly as the model confusing you with another company, or leaving you out because it is unsure.

How mentions are earned in practice

Not by buying them, but by making it easy and justified to mention you. The methods that work best for a Finnish SME:

Get into the listings that are already cited. Test your industry’s buying questions in AI services and see which listings the answers quote. Those are your target list. Many directories accept companies free or for a small fee.

Give the media a reason to write. Data, a survey, a contrarian view or a local angle on an industry issue. Even one news mention a year is more than most of your competitors have.

Be present where your field is discussed. An expert answer on a forum under your own name and company is a mention you wrote yourself, as long as it is genuinely useful and not an advert. Advert-like placements are recognised and turn against you.

Ask customers to speak. A review on your Google profile, a mention in a customer’s own channel, a joint case article. A satisfied customer is the best source of mentions, and usually just asking is enough.

Brand mentions and partnerships: sealing a deal with a handshake

Why a mention elsewhere counts more than a page of your own

Everything on your own site is a claim you make about yourself. A mention on someone else’s site is evidence, and models weight the two differently for the same reason people do.

This shows up most in category questions. When someone asks which companies do a particular thing in Finland, the names that come back are usually the ones appearing in listings, comparisons and articles written by others. A company can have the best pages in its field and still be absent from that answer, because nothing outside its own domain says it exists.

The practical implication is that content work has a ceiling. Past a point, further pages on your own site stop moving the category answers, and the work has to move outward.

Where mentions actually come from

The realistic sources for a Finnish SME are narrower than the general advice suggests, and four of them do most of the work.

  • Industry listings and directories. Unglamorous and effective, because they are structured, they name categories, and they are exactly what a model reads when asked who exists in a field.
  • Trade media and association publications. A comment, an expert piece or an interview. Small circulation, high credibility.
  • Comparison and review sites. Where they exist for your category, being listed at all matters more than the score.
  • Discussion forums and communities. Genuine participation only. This is where the temptation to fake it is strongest and where faking it is most visible.

What these share is that they are places a person would look for the same information. That is a reasonable test for whether a mention is worth pursuing.

This is the difference from traditional link building and it changes what is worth doing.

A language model reading a page about accounting firms in Turku registers the names it contains whether or not they are hyperlinked. The name in text, next to the category and the location, is the signal. A link adds value for search visibility and for referral traffic, but its absence does not make the mention worthless.

That widens the field considerably. Podcast appearances, newsletters, conference programmes, membership lists and press comments all count, and most of them are easier to get than a link.

Getting mentioned without a budget

Three approaches work for a company with no PR spend, and all of them trade time for money.

Answer journalists’ requests. Services connecting reporters with sources exist in Finland, the responses take twenty minutes, and the hit rate is low but the mentions are high quality.

Publish something worth citing. Not an opinion piece but data: a survey of your customers, prices across your field, a summary of what changed this year. Original figures get quoted because there is nowhere else to get them.

Show up where your field talks. Associations, events, communities. Slow, unmeasurable in the short term, and the source of most mentions small companies actually accumulate.

Checking what already exists

Before pursuing new mentions, find the ones you have. Most companies underestimate this and some find errors worth correcting.

Search your company name in quotation marks and read past the first page. Search it alongside your main service and your town. Ask two AI services what they know about the company and note which sources they cite. Check the biggest directories in your field for whether you are listed and whether the details are current.

Old entries with a former address, a discontinued service or a previous company name all feed into what models believe. Correcting an existing wrong mention is faster and more valuable than earning a new right one.

What not to do

Two shortcuts are common and both cost more than they return.

Buying mentions in bulk. Paid listing networks and mass directory submissions produce a pattern that looks like what it is, and the sites involved are rarely ones a model treats as credible in the first place.

Writing your own reviews and forum posts. Beyond the obvious problems, this material tends to read alike, and a service summarising it produces a description that sounds like marketing copy rather than customer experience. The absence of that quality is precisely what makes real mentions valuable.

Frequently asked questions

What do brand mentions mean in GEO?

Occurrences of a company’s name on the public web — in listings, media and discussions — regardless of whether a link is attached. Language models learn from these occurrences who to recommend.

Are mentions without links genuinely useful?

For AI visibility, yes. A model learns from the connections in the text, not from link structure. For search engine optimisation a linked mention is still more valuable, so asking for a link is always worth it when it is natural.

Can mentions be bought?

Paid listing places can be, and some of them are perfectly reasonable. But mass mentions in link farm style do not work: models weight sources people actually read and cite. The money is better spent on giving people a real reason to mention you.

How many mentions are needed?

There is no exact threshold, and quality beats quantity. In Finnish industries a handful of mentions in the right places — cited listings, a couple of media mentions, genuine discussions — is often enough to stand out, because competitors do not have even those.

Does a mention need to include a link to count?

No. A model reading a page registers the company name next to its category and location whether or not the name is hyperlinked. A link still helps search visibility and referrals, but mentions without one are worth pursuing.

What is the fastest way for a small company to get mentioned?

Correcting and completing the listings that already exist, then publishing original figures from your own work. Data nobody else has gets quoted because there is nowhere else to get it, and it requires no budget beyond the time to compile it.

Mapping mentions is part of the first phase of our GEO work: we find out which sources the models cite in your industry and which of them you can get into. You can see where you stand right away with the AI visibility test.
