Performance Max is Google’s automated campaign type, appearing across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail and Maps at once. The automation is a big help — and a big risk if you cannot steer it.
Quick summary
- Performance Max suits online stores and ecommerce-type businesses.
- It needs at least 50 conversions a month to learn.
- It requires a proper feed and well-organised asset groups.
- It is not a magic solution — it needs active optimisation.
What is Performance Max?
Performance Max (PMax) is a Google campaign type where you advertise across every Google channel at once. One campaign, several channels, and the algorithm moves the budget to wherever conversions are cheapest.
It sounds like a miracle solution, and sometimes it behaves like one. But it needs the right groundwork.
When is PMax worth it?

- An online store: this is where PMax shines. A product feed makes the automation sensible.
- A service business with high conversion volume
- A lead gen business whose conversions are well defined
It does not work when targeting has to be precise (B2B by job title, for instance) or when there are not enough conversions.
The most common mistakes
- Starting with PMax before Standard Shopping or Search has been optimised
- Not giving the algorithm enough time to learn (2–4 weeks)
- Building the asset groups carelessly
- Not using audience signals, which speed up the learning
Frequently asked questions

Can I switch Standard Shopping off in favour of PMax?
Not straight away. They cannibalise each other, but without Standard Shopping you lose control.
Why does PMax spend the budget on branded searches?
It is a common problem. You can restrict branded searches to a Search campaign and exclude them from PMax with a brand exclusion list.
How much budget does PMax need?
At least 30–50 conversions a month is realistic. That usually means a media budget of €2,000+/month.
