GEO pricing — what visibility in AI search costs and how the price is formed

GEO hinta lasketaan tapauskohtaisesti: laskin työpöydällä

GEO, meaning visibility work for AI search, costs a Finnish SME typically between a few hundred and a couple of thousand euros a month, and a one-off audit usually lands between €500 and €2,000. The range is wide for the same reason it is in SEO: the price depends on what has already been done and how competitive the topic is. In this article I go through what makes up the price of GEO and when it is worth paying for.

What the price of GEO work is made of

The billable work divides in practice into four parts, and how they are weighted decides the total.

Auditing the starting point. Before optimising anything you need to know what the language models currently say about the company. The audit tests dozens of buying-intent questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers and records whether the company is mentioned, who is mentioned instead and which sources the answers lean on. This is one-off work.

The technical foundation. Checking that AI crawlers can reach the site, that structured data is in order and that the content is in a form answers can easily be lifted from. This is often the smallest cost, because much of the work is one-off and overlaps with technical SEO.

Content. The largest and most continuous cost. Language models cite content that answers questions directly and whose claims can be checked. If the site does not have content like that, it has to be produced, and it costs the same as quality content production does anywhere.

Mentions elsewhere. Models also learn from other sources: industry listings, directories, media and discussion forums. The cost of this work varies the most, because it is slow manual work.

GEO pricing comes from the workload: a calculator and pen on paper

What GEO costs in practice

Indicative ranges we see in the Finnish SME market:

Work Typical price Nature
GEO audit €500–2,000 one-off
Technical clean-up €300–1,500 one-off
Ongoing GEO work €600–1,500/month monthly
GEO as part of an SEO agreement €0–500/month extra monthly

The bottom row is worth noting. If your company already has SEO work running, GEO is usually not a separate large investment but an extension: the same content work serves both, and what is left to pay separately is mostly the audit and the monitoring.

Four questions and you know what is holding growth back

The growth diagnosis tells you in a minute whether the bottleneck is visibility, the site or measurement.

Why GEO is cheaper now than it will be later

Competition in AI search is still thin in Finland. When you ask a language model for a recommendation for, say, an accounting firm or an e-commerce platform, the same few names keep coming up, often because those are the ones written about clearly and referenced elsewhere. Getting into that group now takes a fraction of the work that top positions on Google require for competitive terms.

This window will not stay open. The more companies start producing content structured for AI, the more a place in the answer will cost. The same thing happened in search engine optimisation: in the early 2010s you could reach the top with light work, and now you cannot.

When GEO is not yet worth spending on

In fairness: GEO is not the next step for every company. If the website is slow, there is little content or the conversion path is missing, the money produces more spent on fixing those. AI visibility is built on the same fundamentals as search visibility, and without decent content there is nothing to cite.

The other case is a purely local bricks-and-mortar business whose customers find it on Google Maps. AI search is growing there too, but getting the Google Business Profile in order achieves the same thing for less money.

How to judge whether a quote is sensible

Three questions separate a proper GEO quote from a bad one:

  • Is the starting point measured? If the quote contains no audit of what the models currently say, results cannot be verified later.
  • What concretely gets done? “We will optimise your AI visibility” is not an answer. A proper quote lists the content, the technical changes and the places where mentions will be built.
  • Are mentions guaranteed? Nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend you specifically. If someone guarantees it, be wary; the same goes for guaranteed Google rankings.

Where the range comes from

A quoted range of a few hundred to a couple of thousand euros a month is wide enough to be unhelpful without knowing what moves a company within it. Four factors do most of the moving.

The starting point. A site with good content and clean technical foundations needs restructuring rather than production, which is a fraction of the cost. A site with thin content needs the content written, and that is the expensive part regardless of the channel it serves.

Competition in the topic. In a field where three companies have done this work, entering the answer takes little. In one where twenty have, it takes sustained effort.

How much is already running. A company with SEO in place is adding to existing work. One starting from nothing is funding the foundations too.

Whether the measurement is manual. Question sets run by hand cost time every quarter. Automated monitoring costs a subscription instead.

What you are buying at each level

The figures in the table above describe different things, and the difference is easier to judge by what arrives.

An audit at the lower end of €500 to €2,000 produces a question log, a technical findings list and a priority order. It is a decision document rather than a change to the site, and it is worth buying alone if you intend to act on it internally.

Technical clean-up at €300 to €1,500 is a fixed piece of work: crawler access, structured data, page structure. It ends, and it does not recur.

Ongoing work at €400 to €2,000 a month is mostly content plus measurement. The variation within that range is almost entirely how much content is being produced, which is the honest way to compare two offers.

Comparing offers without being misled

Proposals in this field are hard to compare because they describe activity rather than output. Four questions make them comparable.

  • How many pages of content per month, and who writes them. This is the largest cost line and the one most often left vague.
  • How is visibility measured, and do I get the question log. If the answer is a proprietary score with no underlying data, the reporting cannot be verified.
  • What happens to the work if we stop. Content stays; a monitoring subscription does not.
  • What overlaps with our existing SEO work. An honest supplier will say most of it, and price accordingly.

An offer that cannot answer the second question is worth declining regardless of price, because there is no way to tell later whether it worked.

Doing it yourself, and what that costs

Much of this is within reach of a company with someone who can write, and the real cost is time rather than money.

The technical checks take an afternoon and need no specialist. The question set takes two hours to build and about ninety minutes per quarter to run. The content is the part that does not compress: a page that answers one buying-stage question well takes three to five hours, and ten of them is the realistic first-year target.

That adds up to roughly fifty hours in a year. Whether that is cheaper than buying it depends entirely on what the person doing it would otherwise be doing, which is a question only the company can answer.

What the money should produce

Setting expectations before the invoice arrives avoids the most common disappointment in this field.

Within three months: technical access confirmed, a measurement baseline recorded, and the first restructured pages live. Nothing visible in traffic yet, and anyone promising otherwise is describing something other than how this works.

Within six to nine months: a rising share of your question set mentioning the company, and the first referral sessions from AI services. Small numbers with better than average conversion.

Within a year: a measurable difference in the competitor set appearing alongside you, and brand searches trending up. That last one is the closest thing to proof the channel offers, and it is why the baseline in month one matters.

When to spend nothing

Three situations where the money returns more elsewhere, stated plainly.

If the site is slow, broken on mobile or missing a way to make contact, fix that first. Visibility delivers visitors to a site that cannot convert them.

If there is almost no content, the cost is content production rather than GEO, and it should be budgeted and judged as such.

If the business is entirely local and its customers find it through maps and word of mouth, the honest advice is that this channel is not where the next customer comes from. Reviews and listing accuracy are the better use of the same afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO cost for an SME?

A one-off audit typically costs €500–2,000 and ongoing work €600–1,500 a month. If GEO is done as an extension of existing SEO work, the additional cost is often just a few hundred euros a month.

Is GEO a one-off project or ongoing work?

Both. The technical foundation and the audit are one-off, but content and mentions build over months, and the models’ answers keep changing, so monitoring is needed continuously.

Can GEO be done in-house without an agency?

The basics can. Test what the models say about your company, make sure the crawlers can reach your site and write content that answers your customers’ questions directly. An agency is usually needed at the point where you want systematic monitoring and mentions in outside sources.

How quickly does GEO produce results?

More slowly than advertising, often faster than SEO. Content changes can show in search-based AI answers within weeks, because Perplexity and ChatGPT fetch fresh information from the web. Influencing what the models know more permanently takes months.

Can GEO be done without buying it as a service?

Largely yes for a company with someone who can write. The technical checks take an afternoon and the measurement about ninety minutes a quarter. The content is the part that does not compress, at roughly three to five hours per page.

How soon should results be visible?

Expect nothing in traffic for the first three months, a rising share of mentions in your question set by six to nine months, and a measurable shift in the competitor set alongside you within a year. Anyone promising faster is describing something other than how this works.
