Perplexity is an AI search engine that builds every answer on top of a web search and marks its sources as numbered references. For a company this is the easiest way into AI search: because Perplexity always cites, visibility is concrete, measurable and reachable faster than getting into a model’s memory. Here is how Perplexity chooses its sources and how a Finnish company gets into them.
How Perplexity differs from ChatGPT
Both answer questions, but there is a difference in architecture that matters for company visibility. ChatGPT often answers from memory and searches the web when needed. Perplexity searches in practice always: every answer is assembled from search results, and the sources appear alongside the answer as clickable references.
Three things follow from this:
- Freshness decides. A good page published today can be a source tomorrow. You do not have to wait for the slowness of training data.
- Traffic is traceable. The reference links send visitors who show up in analytics as perplexity.ai referrals.
- Competition is page by page. A single good page can become a source even if the site’s overall authority is modest. That is an opening for a small operator that top Google positions do not offer in the same way.

What kind of pages Perplexity cites
Testing buying-intent questions and looking at the reference lists, the same pattern repeats. The sources chosen are pages that answer the question concisely right at the start, contain verifiable facts — prices, comparisons, definitions, steps — and whose title matches the question. Listings and comparison articles are over-represented: for ”best X” and ”X or Y” questions, Perplexity happily picks a page that is already a comparison.
Correspondingly, what is almost always missing from the sources are home pages and service pages that speak in generalities. ”We offer comprehensive solutions” is not an answer to any question, so it does not get cited.

How to become a Perplexity source
Let the crawler in. Perplexity’s crawler respects robots.txt blocks. Check that your site does not block it, and that a firewall or bot protection is not returning it an error page.
Write for questions, not keywords. People ask Perplexity whole questions. Build the content so every important question gets its own section whose opening is a complete answer. Question-shaped subheadings help both the machine and the reader.
Offer numbers and comparisons. Concrete detail gets cited. Price ranges, timescales, checklists and honest comparisons end up as references many times more often than general text.
Keep the content current. Being search-based works both ways: an outdated page drops out of the sources as fast as a fresh one climbed in. Updating years and prices is Perplexity visibility maintenance.
Look at who is cited now. Test ten questions from your field and open the source list for each answer. That is a direct list of the pages you need to be better than, and of the listings worth getting into.
How big a channel are we talking about
Frankly: Perplexity’s user numbers in Finland are still small compared with Google, and traffic from it is a fraction of a per cent on most sites. There are still two reasons to invest. The user base skews towards technology and professional work, meaning B2B buyers whose individual deals are valuable. And the same content work that earns Perplexity references improves visibility in ChatGPT’s searches and Google’s AI answers. Perplexity is the most transparent of them, so it works as a gauge for the whole GEO effort: if you cannot get into its sources, you are unlikely to get into the others.

How a Perplexity answer is built
The difference from an ordinary language model is that Perplexity does not answer from memory. Every question starts a chain, and at each step your site either makes it in or drops out.
First the question is interpreted and turned into one or more search queries. The search runs, and around ten pages are picked from the results. Those pages are fetched and read, after which the model writes the answer and marks each claim with a numbered reference to the source it came from.
The practical consequence matters. If your page does not rank highly enough in search, it never gets read in the first place. Perplexity visibility is therefore not an alternative to search engine optimisation but is built on top of it. A second consequence: because the content is fetched at query time, a fresh or updated page can become a source quickly, unlike models that rely on training data where the lag is months.
What kind of content becomes a citation
A few traits recur in cited pages, and they become obvious once you compare ten answers in a row.
- The answer is findable without reading. A number, a price, a definition or a comparison sits in its own paragraph or a table rather than buried mid-introduction.
- The page covers one question. A general page spanning ten topics almost always loses to one that answers exactly what was asked.
- The information is current and dated. Prices, years and statistics age, and the model favours pages whose freshness can be verified.
- The source is identifiable. Author, company and contact details visible. Anonymous content is cited less often than content with someone behind it.
One observation deserves separate mention: Perplexity often cites pages that are not Google’s top result. It is enough to be in the top ten and to answer the question better than the others. That makes the channel unusually interesting for a small company with no realistic path to first place against large players.
Tracking your Perplexity visibility
Perplexity is the easiest AI service to measure because the citations are visible. Tracking needs no tools, only method.
Write down ten questions your customer would ask while considering a purchase. Put them to Perplexity once a month and record three things in a spreadsheet: whether your company is mentioned, whether your site is cited as a source, and which competitors appear. After three months the sheet tells you a direction that no single query can.
A second measure sits in analytics. Perplexity clicks appear in GA4 under the source perplexity.ai, and because the service links its sources prominently, click-through tends to be better than in other AI services. A third and lightest check is the server log: visits from PerplexityBot confirm your site is being read at all.
The limits of the channel
In fairness the channel has three limits worth knowing before investing in it.
User numbers in Finland are small. Perplexity is a tool for professionals and technically inclined users, so for a company selling consumer products the volume remains modest for now. Second, answers vary: the same question on different days can produce different sources, because the search runs afresh each time. No conclusion should rest on a single result in either direction.
Third, the visibility is borrowed. It rests on search rankings, so if organic visibility weakens, Perplexity visibility disappears with it. The channel is not independent but an extension of search engine optimisation, and it deserves to be treated as one in the budget too.
Where to start with no visibility at all
Starting from zero, forget broad strategy and pick one question: the one your customer asks just before deciding, and the one worth most to you.
Write a page that answers it in the first paragraph. No background, no history, the answer straight away. Follow it with the numbers, limits and exceptions that make the answer trustworthy. Add a date and an author. Finally make sure the page is indexed and ranks at least in the top ten for the related search terms.
Once that works for one question, repeat for the next. Ten such pages cover the entire buying journey for most small companies, and they are simultaneously the best possible material for ordinary search visibility. The work is not wasted even if AI search never grows as expected.
Frequently asked questions
What is Perplexity?
An AI search engine that answers questions by assembling a response from web search results and marking the sources as references. It is used particularly for research and comparison before a buying decision.
How do I get my company into Perplexity’s sources?
Make sure Perplexity’s crawler can reach your site, and produce pages that answer customers’ questions directly and concretely. A single good comparison or pricing article is often enough to become a source in its own topic.
Does Perplexity traffic show in analytics?
It does. Visitors from the reference links register as perplexity.ai referral traffic, so the channel’s contribution can be tracked in GA4 like any other source.
Is Perplexity worth investing in if my customers are consumers?
It carries less weight than in B2B, because the user base skews professional. The work is not wasted though: the same content serves Google’s AI answers and ChatGPT, whose user bases are broader.
Why does Perplexity cite my competitor and not me?
The likeliest reason is ranking: Perplexity picks its sources from search results, so a page outside the top ten never gets read. The second common reason is page structure, where the competitor answers the question directly while your answer is buried in a long text.
How quickly can a new page become a Perplexity source?
At best within days, because Perplexity fetches content at answer time rather than relying on training data. The requirement is that the page is indexed and ranks well enough for the search terms tied to the question.
